Russell rockets back to beat Raceland

FLATWOODS Russell continuously chipped away at an early 6-0 hole as it rallied to topple Raceland, 10-6, on Tuesday.

Down 6-3 in the sixth, the Red Devils staged a comeback when Kenith Gomez and Landon Brewer led off with a single and double, respectively. Casey Hensley later tripled and then scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball.

Ben Thompson sent a “missile,” according to coach Tim Rice, over the left-field wall for a pinchhit two-run shot that put Russell up, 9-6, after Austin Brinkman walked.

Gomez and Hensley each had two hits. Chaz Whitt and Thompson recorded two RBIs apiece.

Jake Heighton and Seth Mills had two hits each for Raceland (12-9), which fell to 0-4 in 63rd District play. Russell is 40 in that category with matchups with Greenup County, also unbeaten in the district, coming up next Monday and Tuesday.

Jaeden Layne tallied eight strikeouts in the start for Russell. Justin Manning picked up the win in relief. He fanned four, walked none and relented one hit in two frames.

The Red Devils (17-7) will host East Carter on Thursday.

Raceland is at home against Fleming County on Thursday.
