Lady Devils lock up 63rd No. 1

VANCEBURG Leading by five points after one quarter, Russell locked Lewis County down defensively to lock up the 63rd District’s top seed. The visiting Lady Devils allowed six points to the Lady Lions in each of the last three quarters for a 56-27 victory in the Jungle on Wednesday night. Russell’s 35th consecutive victory against district opposition secured it the No. 1 seed in the district tournament. Lewis County was slotted into the No. 2 seed. Shaylen Steele scored 17 points and Kaeli Ross pitched in 10 for the Lady Devils (20-6, 5-0 district seeding). Nine players scored for Russell, which is 17-3 in its last 20 games. Sarah Paige Weddington led Lewis County (14-13, 3-3 district seeding) with eight points. Eight Lady Lions scored.
