Welcome to Russell Independent Schools!  Our primary focus in our district is to provide the best quality education and opportunities for ALL students.  We take great pride in all of our programs and always strive to be the best that we can be.  From enhanced scholastic opportunities to our diverse array of sports teams and student clubs, ALL students are encouraged to take risks and step outside of their comfort zone to stretch their academic, athletic, and personal identities.  Russell Independent School District is revered for our achievements throughout the years, but we continue to look for new ways to improve and expand opportunities for students – we never stop striving for and maintaining excellence. Russell Red Devils' Fall Sports
Russell Independent Schools is extremely proud of the part that sports has played in the rich tradition of our district. From our two State Championships in football to our State Records held in Track, we have much to celebrate regarding our sports programs. Our Athletic Director maintains updates utilizing Twitter@Russellsports for all of the RHS contests; schedules (game times, bus departures, cancellations, etc.) are made available through Schedule Star, and a separate website, www.reddevilsports.com, is maintained to keep our school community informed about our Russell Red Devils! We offer the following varsity interscholastic sports for Fall: Football (boys), Volleyball (girls), Cross Country (boys and girls), Golf (boys and girls), and Soccer (boys and girls).  KHSAA Form   << Close

History of Russell Independent Schools

The Russell School System is the oldest school system in Greenup County. In 1870, Miss Alice Carner realized that there was a need for a school and opened a private school in Russell, KY. Originally, the teaching took place in a recreation house which stood in Carner's Grove, but in 1874, a school building was erected near the junction of Kenwood Drive and Route 23. In July of 1891, voters of Russell laid the foundation work for the present school system.   Read more...   << Close

Technology supports the strong tradition and goals of excellence that the Russell Independent Schools system has fostered over the years. Our mission states, "We will commit resources and staff to enable students to develop the necessary skills that empower all students to pursue academic excellence as demonstrated in achievement of state and national standards." Our district is therefore committed to capitalizing on all available funding sources to ensure the priorities established by our district are accomplished. The vision for the Technology Program at Russell Independent Schools is to support our schools in accomplishing the district's mission, while integrating 21st Century technology that will empower the learning community to become information-literate critical thinkers and achieve lifelong learning goals in their personal, educational, and workplace environment.  << Close

Arts and Humanities

Arts and Humanities Instruction begins when children enter the Primary at Russell Independent Schools. Students participate in Visual Art, Music, and Physical Education classes throughout their entire elementary experience. Choral and instrumental music ensembles are additionally offered for students who show interest during their elementary years. Students rotate through Visual Art, General Music, and Physical education classes in Middle School and are offered a wide array of A&H options to fulfill graduation requirements and personal interests at the High School level. Students participate in Governor's School for the Arts, Breakfast with the Arts, All-District and All-State Ensembles (Band, Orchestra, and Choir), National Art Honor's Society, and community theatre productions.   << Close
