Key grab, 14 hits propel Lady Devils

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. Ali Hartman made a pivotal catch in the outfield, while Madison Darnell and Makayla Fraley combined for seven hits Monday morning in Russell’s 11-9 softball win over Crestview, Ohio, to open the Lady Devils’ spring trip at Cal Ripken Experience.

Crestview, trailing 10-9, loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth inning. After Jaeden Boggs came on in relief of Russell starter Haven Layne, Hartman made a diving grab in the outfield and doubled a runner off third base. Hartman then caught a line drive to end the inning.

Darnell went 4-for-4, including a double. She drove in two runs and also scored twice. Fraley collected three hits and scored three runs.

Grace Osborn and Rylie Cook each chipped in two of the Lady Devils’ 14 hits.

Layne and Boggs combined on a five-hitter.

Layne also doubled and had two RBIs.

In the second game, Russell came up short against Liverpool (N.Y.) 8-5.

Fraley and Hartman each went 3-for-4 to account for the bulk of their team’s eight hits.

Hartman smacked a two-run homer in the first inning, and Darnell did likewise in the sixth.

In between, Cameron Ratliff hit a run-producing double.But Liverpool countered with a 14-hit attack and scored in five of the seven innings. Boggs went the distance for the Lady Devils.

Lady Lions pick up win, loss

Led by Bailey Conley’s 5-for-5 performance, Boyd County pounded out 14 hits against Chesterfield (S.C.) on Monday to complete a 1-1 day at Cal Ripken Experience.

The Lady Lions did all of their scoring in the first four innings, improving to 4-3 on the season and 1-2 on the trip.

Conley had a double and four singles. The junior drove in two runs and scored two runs.

Ashton Rankin went 2-for-5 with two runs, two RBIs and a stolen base for the Lady Lions.

Graci Borders, Maddie Hale and Brooke Layne also produced two hits apiece. Becca Badgett stole two bases.

Layne pitched a complete game as Boyd County overcame seven errors.

Earlier, Boyd County fell 12-4 to Wilson Hall (Sumter, S.C.) — a Class 3A state finalist last season.

Wilson Hall (11-6) scored six runs in the second inning to go up 8-0. All of Boyd County’s scoring came in the fourth inning, including Maddie Lowe’s two-run double.

Conley pitched five innings and went 2-for-3 at the plate. Graci Borders doubled and singled for the Lady Lions.
